About Betterment

Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. Our team is passionate about our mission: making people’s lives better. We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (three days/ week in-office).

About the role

Betterment’s website is the front door of users’ experience with Betterment. It tells our story, inspires prospects to take action, captures our earliest data on our customers, and enriches our customers’ journeys with useful tools and content. As part of our cross-functional Website Experience team, Website Developers will support Betterment’s growth by building delightful experiences for internal and external users. This position will report to our Engineering organization.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below, we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

  • New York City: $140,000 - $155,000

We offer a competitive equity package, health, dental and vision benefits, life and AD&D, short-term and long-term disability insurance, EAP, commuter and parking benefits FSA/HSA, and 401(k) with employer match as well as a flexible PTO policy. This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.  For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

A day in the life

  • Own our web development workflow for HubSpot CMS, serving as the platform expert and maintainer of secure development procedures across our internal teams and external development partners.
  • Own and improve our proprietary deployment pipeline, becoming the DevOps expert for the most important public facing application at Betterment.
  • Identify and optimize inefficiencies like compile time or bulk updates on multitudes of JSON files.
  • Use modern observability strategies to ensure uptime for our site and  positive user experiences.
  • Build out key, flexible page templating to enable speedy iteration for the non-technical content managers and designers on the website team.
  • Develop our technical approach to high-fidelity visual experiences, such as animations in Lottie, HTML5/CSS3, and video, collaborating closely with our in-house animator.
  • Use advanced javascript frameworks like React to build rich user experiences to demonstrate crucial concepts, and critical business flows to capture user intent.
  • Create a consistent eventing framework to inform business decisions.
  • Maintain and extend our content database system in HubDB by writing well-configured endpoints to support other application engineers consuming CMS content within our other properties or other 3rd party applications. You are the API developer for our consuming application teams.
  • Collaborate closely with our Web Platform and Design System teams, aligning our publicly facing website with our web and mobile applications visually, accessibility-wise, and in overall UX.
  • Become a leading development professional and feedback-giver for HubSpot, pushing our partners in R&D and new advancements in the website space, developer operations, and CRM development.
  • Working with our SRE team, create automated serverless functions to help us meet our compliance requirements and keep our content fresh.

What we’re looking for

  • Experience working in theme development in CMS platforms. HubSpot and Webflow would be fantastic experiences to have, but Wordpress, Joomla, or other website solutions count too.
  • A portfolio of experience executing rich animated or video-based web experiences in highly performant ways, such as Lottie, HTML5/CSS3, our other approaches. Data visualization backgrounds could be especially useful.
  • Experience in modern Javascript techniques. Bonus points for server side and TypeScript experience.
  • As part of a growing team, everything you do will be novel. You should excel in ambiguity and know how to quickly become an expert in something new.
  • Strong organizational skills when it comes to CSS management and working with design systems plus a focus on a11y.
  • At least 2-3 years of professional work experience, especially in a web development role, such as at a web development agency.
  • A passion for growth and seeing the results of your work come to life. This role has consistently evolved though self-starting individuals. You can make it what you want.
