At Automattic, our goal is to democratize publishing. Providing safe and trusted publishing platforms for our passionate and engaged communities is a key part of this mission. That’s where you come in.

Within our Trust & Safety teams, you’ll be at the cross-section of some of the web’s most relevant and impactful issues. Your efforts will contribute to improvements in everything from our user experience to how we create welcoming, creative communities online.

Our primary focus is on reviewing reports of potentially violative user-generated content on our platforms. This includes related responsibilities such as responding to child safety issues, resolving intellectual property disputes, and fielding law enforcement requests. We’re also regularly evolving our content policies, improving internal processes, examining content trends, and communicating with multiple teams across Automattic.

We believe in the value of diverse perspectives coming together towards a common aim, and if you work here, you’ll be sharpening your skills around critical analysis, eloquent communication, and an open-minded approach to problem solving.

Responsibilities:

  • Review reports of content and behaviors that may violate our platform policies.
  • Consistently enforce our User Guidelines with an eye towards online safety and freedom of speech.
  • Analyze content trends and develop solutions for evolving issues.
  • Work closely within a remote, distributed team to ensure needs are met across regions and timezones.
  • Contribute innovative proposals for improving internal tools, processes, and workflows.
  • Collaborate with teams across Automattic to support user safety.
  • Stay up-to-date on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices around internet rights and online safety.

Requirements:

Is this you?

  • Motivated by impact and leaving the internet a better place than you found it.
  • Deep interest in content moderation, policy development, and crisis management.
  • Up on all the latest in internet policy topics such as freedom of speech, intellectual property, child safety, online extremism, and government requests.
  • Prefer taking a common-sense approach to problem solving and making great judgements rather than following binary formulas.
  • Excited by the idea of communicating nuanced and complex issues in clear, straightforward terms.
  • Deep familiarity with Automattic’s suite of products, particularly WordPress.com and Tumblr.
  • Dedicated to human rights, online safety, and freedom of expression.

Salary range: $40,000-$75,000 USD - Please note that salary ranges are global, regardless of location, and we pay in local currency.

About Automattic

We are the people behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Simplenote, Jetpack, Longreads, Day One, PocketCasts, and more. We believe in making the web a better place.

We’re a distributed company with more than 1900 Automatticians in 96 countries speaking 120+ different languages. And, even more than growth and profitability (although we’re plenty profitable), above all, we’re driven by a mission:  We democratize publishing and commerce so anyone with a story can tell it, and anyone with a product can sell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language, or country.

We believe in Open Source, and the vast majority of our work is available under the GPL.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at Automattic

We’re improving diversity in the tech industry. At Automattic, we want people to love their work and show respect and empathy to all. We welcome differences and strive to increase participation from traditionally underrepresented groups. Our DEI committee involves Automatticians across the company and drives grassroots change. For example, this group has helped facilitate private online spaces for affiliated Automatticians to gather and helps run a monthly DEI People Lab series for further learning. DEI is a priority at Automattic, though our dedication influences far more than just Automatticians: We make our products freely available and translate our products into and offer customer support in numerous languages. We require unconscious bias training for our hiring teams and ensure our products are accessible across different bandwidths and devices.

Automattic is a Most Loved Company and Disability Confident Committed. (Here’s what that might mean for you.) Learn more about our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion and our Employee Resource Groups.
